Quest Clues:

Step 1: Begin this quest at the parking lot next to the dog park and playground. Look around and observe the nature you see.

Note:Remember that you are on top of 64 acres of land that was a landfill for 30 years. This park is on top of 2.2 million tons of compacting trash 38 feet below. It will continue to shift and decompose, which is why the surface was made of more flexible materials such as rubberized surfaces.

Something to think about: All landfills have an impact on the environment. The U.S. has 3,091 active landfills and over 10,000 old municipal landfills. Municipal landfills and their leachate (water) and air emissions are hazardous. All landfills will eventually fail and give off leachate into both ground and surface water.

Step 2: Face north from the playground. You should see one long cactus in the near distance. You should also see a ramada nearby. Make your way there. Observe the nature planted under the ramada the different types of bushes, and cacti.

Note: As you walk towards the ramada, and arrive at the ramada. Take notice to the vegetation around you. This unique landscape was planted with wildflowers and other vegetation such as cacti and bushes.

Something to think about: Saguaro cacti are found only in the Sonoran Desert, which is in Arizona and some of Mexico. The saguaro is not considered an endangered species, and with the proper environment, these plants can live to be as old as 200 years old.

Step 3:This step is a bit more difficult. Make your way over to the highest point north of you. Embark up the spiral pathway to the highest ramada. On the way, notice the view of the valley around you, and the vegetation planted on the way up.

Note: Once at the top of the hill, look all around you. From this point, you can see Phoenix, the Superstition Mountains, Four Peaks, South Mountain and the Satan Mountains - All from this point.

Step 4: Make your way back down the spiral walkway. Once you reach the bottom, walk north towards the large arrow in the ground, by the archery range.

Note: Notice the plant life around this area. In particular, take notice to the aloe plant.

Something to think about: There are actually about 400 different types of aloe plants. Aloe is a very resilient plant. Its root system can withstand freezing temperatures, as well as very hot temperatures. This plant also survives well indoors. The Aloe species requires little water, and overwatering will harm this plant. For centuries this plant has been known for its healing properties. It is used to treat anything from bruises, cuts, burns, and stomach problems.

Step 5: Now make your way west. Follow the pathway. You will notice that this pathway runs along a canal. Follow this path all along the park. Eventually, this path will lead you near the starting point.

Step 6: End your quest at the Palo Verde tree, which is the starting point.

Something to think about: The Palo Verde tree is the official Arizona state tree. It is actually Spanish for "green stick". It was given this name due to its unique green trunk. The green trunk of this tree allows the plant to undergo photosynthesis even when it has a lack of leaves on it. Palo verde trees produce yellow flowers in the spring.
